A rifle is a long barrel gun that you carry and use for longer range. A rifle back in World War 1 was war changing. The rifles changed the war because they got so accurate if you peeked your head above the trench it was almost guaranteed every time that you would get shot. These rifles also changed the dynamic of the war because they are what started trench warfare - you had to get below the gun or these would kill you. The rifles were so good because of how long the barrel was it guided the bullet for long enough to be accurate. Rifles before WW1 took a while to reload too but the rifles in WW1 reloaded fast. These rifles also had a bayonet that you could attach for melee. The standard rifle of the British army during WW1 was the Lee-Enfield .303.
